What is "Religion"?

Today in class (REL 1003 & REL 2036) we began wrestling a bit more with this question as to "What is religion?" I made the case that a given religion is perhaps best understood on a spectrum, which reflects a wide-range of beliefs and practices. In other words, it is arguably difficult to say with utmost certainty that "this" is of a given religion while "this" is not. The video link below is a brief reflection by Reza Aslan, author of "No god but God" and co-creator of the MecccaLocator iPod application, on these same issues. Listen as he speaks of religions as ever-adapting, evolving and malleable phenomena.

It appears that Reza Aslan will be speaking on November 11th at Elon University. Perhaps a group of us might go to hear him. Stay tuned for more details!
