Religion & Pop Culture Alert! - Rosh Hashana meets Kanye West

Time for another addition of Religion & Pop Culture! Last December, in a post titled "New Hanukkah song by... Sen. Orin Hatch?." I referenced Jeffrey Goldberg's lament with regard to the dearth of good Jewish holiday songs (Adam Sandler's "Hanukkah Song" not withstanding). Well fear not, finally the long drought is over.

Apparently Kanye West (and even the cast of Glee) has nothing on the the National Jewish Outreach Program (NJOP). Fresh on the heels of Glee's parody of Kanye West's song "Gold Digger," the NJOP has just released a video that encourages Jews to "make their souls bigger" by observing the Jewish New Year festival known as Rosh Hashanah. Rosh Hashanah begins this year on Thursday, Sept. 9th and marks the start to a ten day period of repentance in which all Jews seek to prepare for Yom Kippur, the "day of atonement," the day when the names of the righteous are recorded in the divine book of judgement, thereby ensuring eternal life.

Complete with shofars (come check one out in my office), calls for charitable giving (zedakah), and dancing in the halls of a synagogue, the NJOP... well you can't blame them for trying to bring new life to an old ritual of renewal. Watch the video below and then let us know what you think in the comments section!
