Religion & Pop Culture Alert!

Here's the first update in my new series called Religion & Pop Culture Alert. Think of it as a place to hear, see and read examples of the collision of religious matters and 21st century pop culture sensibilities.

Last week Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the creators of South Park, found themselves in some religious hot water. The issue revolved around a recent episode in which it was suggested that the prophet Muhammad was in town, in a bear suit. According to the website RevolutionMuslim.com this was not only an insult to Islam, but it was in direct violation of the Islamic commandment to never visually depict the prophet. Spoiler alert! - (Turns out that its actually Santa Claus in the bear suit, instead the prophet is "shown" under the word CENSORED) Here's a link to an article on the matter - "Muslim groups warns 'South Park' creators."

Ironically, this wasn't the first time the prophet Muhammad made an appearance on South Park. In a 2001 episode (5th season) he joined the likes of Krishna, the Buddha, Jesus, Joseph Smith, Lao Tzu and others to form "The Super Best Friends." And this time he was actually shown. I would tell you to go watch these episodes for yourself and then the tell me what you think, but it appears Comedy Central has pulled both the '01 and '10 episodes. Here's the best we can do for now...
